entreQuest promotes Alec Kisiel to Director of Client Engagement

Posted on May 30, 2013 by Emily

Alec Kisiel_headshotBaltimore, MD, May 30, 2013 entreQuest, a Baltimore-based firm that helps its clients grow regardless by providing high-level strategic planning, specialized training programs, and personalized leadership coaching, today announced the promotion of Engagement Manager, Alec Kisiel to Director of Client Engagement. Alec’s new role will focus on the strategic direction and coordination of entreQuest’s resources to deliver a remarkable client experience.

“Alec’s tireless effort towards our mission to help America’s small and midsized businesses grow regardless of their size, their industry, or the economy, is recognized not only by our internal leadership team, but also by our clients,” Executive Vice President and Partner, Misti Aaronson said. “As a rising star at entreQuest, we are confident that Alec is ready to have even more impact on our clients and our growth plan—hence the added responsibilities of a director level position within the company.”

As Engagement Manager, Alec worked in conjunction with entreQuest’s business consultants and clients to ensure that projects were completed on time and that all parties remained in alignment on the direction of the engagement.

“Since launching my book, Grow Regardless, entreQuest has seen the impact our message has had on the community of small and mid-sized businesses, and we remain committed to the idea that an organization’s best asset is its people,” said Joe Mechlinski, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder. “That is why we focus on the growth and development of the team already in place instead of seeking talent outside of the firm. Alec is prime example of the way employee development and career-pathing can work inside a small company in order to build capability and success, for both the team and the organization as a whole.”

Before joining entreQuest, Alec consulted for a local sales consulting firm where he helped guide and grow sales for other local companies across multiple industries. Alec also worked as a Client Services Manager for a market research company, giving him extensive experience overseeing research projects for leading national brands.

Alec and his wife live, work, and play in downtown Baltimore. He is also an avid homebrewer and enjoys practicing martial arts.

Go Regardless!

Posted on March 29, 2013 by Joe Mechlinski

“Finally, a book that brings it all together. Not just ‘what to do’ but ‘how to do it’. Practical applications that became VERY useful when motivating a stagnant workforce.”  – Davidn05.

“…I didn’t expect to be able to get all that much out of 160 pages – but I was pleasantly surprised how many ideas I scribbled down as I ripped through this thing. Chapter 5 alone was worth the price – the “25 Reasons Why” exercise is something every business owner and every employee should go through to realign the internal compass.”  – Rich M.

“Grow Regardless is a must read for a hands on Business Owner. I loved the real life story of not just talking about it, but doing it. Joe Mechlinski lives this stuff everyday.” – Mike T.

When you look at what’s happening—or not happening—in Washington, it’s clear that our officials have a hard time taking action. I believe choosing to do nothing is a form of choosing something. In this case, the ramifications of “nothing” are not negligible. Among many other consequences, the sequestration will cut Small Business Administration guaranteed loans to the tune of $540 million this year—not cool!

Representatives, left and right, bemoan the situation, describing it in terms of being “unable” to take action. Call it what it is: lack of momentum and just plain old inertia.
This is why we sent a copy of Grow Regardless to several key members of Congress.  We do not believe we have the only answer… but Grow Regardless could be also stated as Go Regardless (thanks to eQ client, Mark D for coining this)!

For entrepreneurs and CEOs, I would liken this to getting stuck: waiting for more proof before you invest in growth, doing more research and development instead of doing more execution, delaying a key hiring decision, or endlessly tinkering with the new website until its perfect.

Don’t fail to take action when everything around you is screaming for somebody, please, to just do something. Most business owners know the importance of decisive action, and the sequestration is a great reminder that doing nothing has real consequences.

Peter Sims has an excellent book, Little Bets: How Breakthrough Ideas Emerge from Small Discoveries. He argues that to move forward, we must be willing to make small bets. The alternative, waiting months and years until everything is guaranteed, is a path to stagnancy or even regression. Just move forward. Of course, Sims advocates for the smart bet and the savvy judgment. But, willingness to make the little bet can be less risky, in the long run, than staying frozen in place until every single sign says “Go.”

To help you Go Regardless, here is a training video: 5 Critical Steps to Change.

5 steps thumb

In this video, you’ll learn: how to engage your team and ask the right questions to create an organizational change, using the five steps.

This, too, applies to our government. If we seem to be hurtling toward a crisis, do something! Entrepreneurs know this instinctively. If your company is running out of money, you’d better make a decision, because if you don’t, you will soon find yourself without any options. The lesson? Take action. Go, regardless!

Beyond this, we are resolved to practice what we preach.  Here are 5 “go-ing regardless” moments at eQ:

  • The MARKET is still responding to our book—but what’s more, is the movement behind the book, to help small and mid-sized businesses succeed and grow regardless in a turbulent time, has really caught fire thanks to media coverage like FOXNews Live, Bloomberg Radio, The Baltimore Sun, Wealthy Radio, an NPR Affiliate, and InTheCapital.
  • We stand among GIANTS—on a personal level, last week I had the absolute pleasure to interview one of my favorite business authors of all time, Dan Pink. Dan and I spent about 50 minutes discussing his newest book, To Sell Is Human and how his theories on sales affect small businesses today. If you missed the interview, or just want to listen again, click here!
  • We are GROWING regardless—on another personal note, I’m very proud to share that, Misti Aaronson, was recently promoted from Vice President of Operations to Executive Vice President. Misti, an eQ Partner, has been with our team for eight years and I couldn’t be happier for her success and accomplishments thus far. I’m confident she will exceed expectations in her new role. I think it goes without saying, the first quarter of 2013 has been a whirlwind, but as I’ve said before, we’re just getting started… And the second quarter is looking pretty great already.
  • SIGNING Event—this past Wednesday evening we joined Integrity Networking Group for a book signing.
  • SPEAKING Event – I’m also looking forward to speaking at the Greater Baltimore Committee’s LEADERship Alumni breakfast on April 3rd.

These are just a few of the ways the eQ team is working to help other small businesses Grow Regardless—help us keep the movement going and purchase a copy of Grow Regardless for you or a friend or post a review on Amazon.com if you’ve already finished the book.

A “Bronze” Announcement and a “Pink” Event

Posted on March 15, 2013 by Joe Mechlinski

As an athlete, third place and a bronze medal didn’t mean much.  As an author, having Grow Regardless hit #3 on The New York Times business best sellers list for the month of February—especially next to Malcolm Gladwell and Daniel Pink—is cause for celebration!

Being named to The New York Times, USA Today, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble weekly lists has been amazing.

Since hitting these lists some great things have happened. We have received: some awesome reviews (like the one here from fellow New York Times best seller, Wes Moore), requests for us to keynote events across the country, and increased interest in our business and the Growth University.

Hitting #3 on The New York Times monthly list means our message is truly resonating with the market and I thank you for your continued support.

What more could I ask for?

That we keep the movement going and continue to spread the message!  The best way I know to do that is to arm you, the small business community, with the tools you need to succeed and grow.

That’s why I’m excited for you to join me next Monday, March 18th for a FREE webinar where I’ll be interviewing Dan Pink (also a fellow New York Times best seller). Dan and I will be discussing his latest book, To Sell Is Human, and our shared theory that everyone is in sales, regardless of their industry or business title.

Dan and I both believe that information and technology has changed the face of business, specifically sales, so much so that what’s left is a new approach to moving people—one that is based on emotional intelligence and relationship building.

So, what are you waiting for? Register now!

Why Can’t It Always Be the Superbowl?

Posted on March 6, 2013 by Joe Mechlinski

Super-Bowl-XLVII-011It was the experience of a lifetime: a father and son traveling to New Orleans to watch their hometown team win the Superbowl. As soon as I learned the Ravens were in, I began planning a trip for my father and me. At every turn, strangers’ willingness to help us on our journey blew me away. It made me wonder, why can’t we always share the spirit of the Superbowl?

We all know that sharing is good. But it’s rare to see an outpouring of graciousness in anything but the most extraordinary circumstances. In many corporate cultures, there’s a reason one-third of workers feel disengaged. It’s the same reason talented employees leave their jobs not to earn more, but to feel valued. Companies often neglect to share their successes with their teams, even though this is a great way to help employees connect and invest. Perhaps the Superbowl has valuable lessons to offer.

For us, sharing began when a friend offered two tickets to the game. I called a travel agent, booking a pricy, complicated itinerary that would get us to New Orleans, but not easily. I mentioned how excited I was about watching the game with my dad. A few minutes later, the agent called backinspired by our story, he went the extra mile to snag a much better deal. It showed me that when the weight of importance is high, when people understand the order of magnitude, it brings out their best. But it didn’t end there.

Finding lodging during Superbowl week is almost impossible, so I was amazed how many people offered us floors to sleep on; a client even offered one of his sales rep’s homes. When we met up with friends, they invited my father and me to join them for the day, including their lunch with the city’s mayor. As we moved from place to place, fellow Ravens fans complete strangers invited us to share a taxi.

Throughout the city, even before we reached the stadium, the mood was infectious and emotions were high. People were in a state of graciousness you don’t often experience. This feeling of a high-stakes event made better by its participants reminded me of my hike up Mount Kilimanjaro. Sure, the adventure was great, but what really made my trip spectacular was the generosity of our crew and companions. I felt the same openness here.

When that infamous power outage hit, everyone around us frantically texted loved ones to report they were okay. My phone, of course, was dead. A friend nearby shared what little battery power he had so I could text home and call a cab. Had he not done so, my father and I would have missed our plane home. Gestures may seem small, but their impact can be huge.

The spirit behind these gestures is one we may not associate with business, but it can absolutely change how we lead our companies. How often do you provide the opportunity for your team to really connect, to share experiences and perspectives? I’m not just talking about the annual company picnic, rather intentional, personal interactions between staff at all levels. Consider your executives, who possess enthusiasm for the company’s future; are they sharing that with everyone, or keeping it to themselves? If we could imagine ourselves in the spirit of the Superbowl, everyone would engage in the desire to connect, support one another, and give.

The flip side of sharing is being willing to accept, even ask for, others’ generosity. On our trip, we faced several occasions when we didn’t have the answers and needed help to find our way. Where are you needing help, yet not asking for it?

One of my favorite parts of our trip was having strangers come up to us and say, “The look on your dad’s face, how happy he is to be on this trip of a lifetime with his son, just made our day.” A small moment, but one that goes deep. How would it feel if we all tried to give each other such experiences? I don’t mean the surface level sharing we do on Facebook and Twitter; I mean meaningful sharing, the kind that makes us feel connected, as employees, as colleagues, as people.

Whether the Ravens had won or lost, my dad and I still would have had an amazing experience, thanks to the people we encountered. That win just gave us one more thing to share. How can we make it feel like the Superbowl, every day?
